Toxandria (919–1125)

Toxandria is the historical name for a region in Noord-Brabant . It is located between the Maas , Dijle and Schelde rivers in the Belgian-Dutch border region.

After repeated attacks by the Franks on the Roman Empire , Emperor Julian gave Toxandria to the Salfranken , a Franconian tribe, as a settlement area in 358 in return for the provision of troops and border security tasks . In return, the federates promised to take over the protection of the Roman borders in this area and defended them under Merowech against attacking Huns under Attila .

In the Middle Ages, Toxandria was initially part of the Duchy of Lower Lorraine . After its dissolution, the landscape, which can no longer be precisely delimited today, essentially belonged to the Duchy of Brabant .
