Hubert Rohde (born February 28, 1929 in Hildesheim ; † February 17, 2019 ) was a German educator and cultural politician . From 1978 to 1988 he was director of the Saarländischer Rundfunk .

Life

Hubert Rohde came from a Christian family and attended the Josephinum Hildesheim grammar school . In order to prevent being drafted into the Waffen SS , at the age of 14 he “volunteered” as a reserve officer applicant for the heavy artillery, a class of service that he knew the “SS” did not have. However, he was no longer used in the military.

After the Second World War he studied pedagogy , philosophy , art history , archeology and theology in Frankfurt (Main) , Munich , Innsbruck , Salzburg and Dublin . Since his student days he was an active member of the Catholic student associations Rhenania Innsbruck , Saxonia , Rheno-Saxonia and Alemannia Munich in the KV .

Rohde was married, his wife Karin died in 1988. The marriage had four children. Since 1962 he lived in Mandelbachtal in Saarland .

After graduating as Dr. phil. (1953) Rohde initially worked as an educator and private tutor as well as in youth work and adult education, then as a lecturer at universities of education in Paderborn and Saarbrücken . In 1965 he was appointed professor for historical and systematic pedagogy, and in the same year he was elected rector of the Peter Wust University (incorporated in the Saarland University of Education in 1969 ) in Saarbrücken. He played a leading role in several academic bodies in the Saarland. He was also a member of the education commission of the German Education Council and chairman of the ARD program advisory board .

In 1977 he was elected director of the Saarland Broadcasting Corporation (SR). He held this office until the end of 1988. Among other things, the founding of the Saarlandwelle (SR 3) went back to his initiative . For him, radio was a means of cultural mediation and international understanding in radio and television. He worked as chairman of the Franco-German radio commission and deputy chairman of the Franco-German television commission.

Political offices

From 1964 to 1970 Rohde was honorary mayor of his home community Heckendalheim (today the district of Mandelbachtal in the Saar-Palatinate district ). In 1970 he was elected as a member of the CDU in the Saarland state parliament. The motto of his election campaign was "Education policy is social policy" . In 1969, to support his candidacy, a voter initiative made up of students, professors and citizens of his area of ​​residence was founded. This resulted in the “Ensheimer Kreis” in 1970, which continues to carry out further training events to this day and to which numerous public figures belong. Hubert Rohde was chairman of the circle from the time it was founded and until his death.

For seven years, from 1970 to 1977 he was a member of the Saarland state parliament . There he was chairman of the cultural policy committee and then vice-president of the state parliament. From 1988 to 2000 he was Secretary General of the Franco-German Cultural Council .

Cultural and social engagement

Hubert Rohde was involved in numerous social projects in schools, children's facilities and hospitals in Palestine . Hubert Rohde was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fuerstenberg and invested in the order on December 9, 1978 in Frankfurt am Main by Grand Prior Franz Hengsbach . From 1991 to 1995 he was Chancellor of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher. For many years he was the chief commander in Trier and Speyer.

Among other things, he was chairman of the board of trustees of the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken, chairman of the board of the German-American Institute, Saarbrücken, chairman and honorary chairman of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) of Saarland and founding president of the Society for the Promotion of Saarland Cultural Heritage. He also founded the Schengen Peace Foundation with the Irish-American artist Matt Lamb .

Until his death in February 2019, Hubert Rohde was involved in a variety of cultural and social areas. Among other things, he was a member of the board of trustees of the social services agency (based in Weimar ).

For his services to the Franco-German understanding, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor by the French President .
