Pedagogical University of the Saarland

The Saarland University of Education existed in Saarbrücken from 1969 to 1978.

With the French occupation of Saarland, teacher training for elementary schools also had to be regulated. The constitution of the Saarland of December 15, 1947 introduced the denominational school and denominational teacher training institutions in seminar form (as in Prussia until 1925). For the Catholic part, there was also a gender segregation. Therefore, from 1948, elementary school teacher training took place in the seminars in Lebach for Catholic boys, Blieskastel for Catholic girls, and Ottweiler for Protestant boys and girls. The four-year preparatory phase was extended by one year from 1952, and accommodation was in boarding schools.

With the rejection of the Saar Statute in 1955, new ideas for the academization of teacher training emerged; As early as May 1956, two denominational educational academies were founded in Saarbrücken : the Catholic Peter Wust University and the Protestant Comenius University. For a four-semester course, the Abitur was required and the minimum duration of study was soon extended to 6 semesters. However, in the context of the Federal German discussion, a scientific university was to emerge without the denominational orientation, for which the state constitution was changed on July 9, 1969. For the winter semester 1968/69, the Catholics moved to Waldhausweg 14 in Saarbrücken (today the Saarland University of Technology and Economics ), the Protestant Comenius University followed, and both were united to form the Saarland University of Education in order to become a teacher at primary and secondary schools to train. Hubert Rhode accompanied the reorganization as rector until 1971, followed by Frank Werner Veauthier and Diether Breitenbach .

In 1978 the Saarland University of Education was closed because its training did not fully meet academic standards, and teacher training was relocated to Saarland University ; only the training for primary school teachers should take place at the universities of teacher education in Koblenz and Landau in Rhineland-Palatinate.
