The Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Saarbrücken is an archaeological museum for the early history of the Saarland . It is housed in the former Saarbrücken district building on Schlossplatz.

history

After the war, the State Conservatory Office and the museum collection were located in the Palais Freithal on Ludwigsplatz . In 1959 the museum was opened to the public. In 1965 Alfons Kolling took over the management of the museum. In 1980 the museum was incorporated into the Saarland Cultural Heritage Foundation . The museum is housed in the former district building. In 2005 the state acquired the house from the Saarbrücken regional association. Through the acquisition, the fragmented museum landscape in Saarland was to be restructured and the museum was to be upgraded. The Saarland State Monuments Office, which was housed in the same building until 2008, had to move to gain additional space. The house was extensively renovated in 2008 and 2009. For the first time since then, all floors of the building are available for museum purposes.
