Alfons Kolling (born September 13, 1922 in Quiigart ; † December 9, 2003 in Göttelborn ) was a German prehistoric scientist . He was the state archaeologist of Saarland and the first director of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Saarbrücken.

Life

Kolling was the son of the miner Nikolaus Kolling (1896–1961) and his wife Else geb. Guthörl (1897–1979); his uncle Paul Guthörl was a paleontologist . After an administrative apprenticeship, military service and training at the School of Arts and Crafts, Alfons Kolling joined the State Conservator's Office as a master student under Boris Kleint and Karl Kunz in 1948 as a restorer of the ancient collection . In the 1950s he began doing scientific work alongside his work and finally studied Prehistory and Protohistory at the Saarland University with Rolf Hachmann from 1959 to 1964 . He received his doctorate in 1965 with a dissertation on the Late Bronze Age on the Saar and Moselle. In the same year he was entrusted with the management of the ground monument maintenance in the Conservatory Office and that of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Saarbrücken.

Act

Kolling's most sustained activities were the excavation of the Celtic princess grave of Reinheim in the 50s and the Roman city in Schwarzenacker 1965–67 and 1980–82. The Reinheimer grave was the first professionally excavated Celtic princely grave in Saarland. Kolling was interested in communicating archaeological topics to a wide audience and, on this basis, designed the archaeological open-air museum in Schwarzenacker . Until 1985 he was state archaeologist of the Saarland.

Kolling was in constant contact with numerous local researchers. In addition to the many research activities, the day-to-day business of the state archaeologist and director of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Saarbrücken took place. He represented the interests of the Saarland in the federal government. The services acquired in the process led to his election as a corresponding member in 1966, and in 1978 as a full member of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. In addition to numerous scientific publications, Kolling has also published popular works on Saarland antiquity, which also stand out stylistically. One of his most important works is the book "Die Römerstadt in Homburg-Schwarzenacker". In 2002 a treatise on the Gallo-Roman spring sanctuary Kasbruch near Neunkirchen was published.

Honors

In 1982 Kolling was awarded the Citizens Medal of the City of Homburg and was appointed honorary professor for prehistory at Saarland University. From 1991 he was a bearer of the Saarland Order of Merit .
