Life

Hoffmann graduated from high school in Linz, studied history and initially rose to the position of Upper Austrian regional archivist and archive director in the regional service. His academic career took him to Vienna , where he became the first professor of economic and social history at the University of Vienna in 1957 . Hoffmann's main research areas included agricultural history and urban history. Among other things, he acted as the editor of several volumes of the multi-volume Austrian city book . A commemorative publication was dedicated to him on his 75th birthday (Ed. Herbert Knittler). Regardless of his appointment to Vienna, Hoffmann remained closely connected to his home country Upper Austria throughout his life . One of Hoffmann's students is Michael Mitterauer , who appeared in the introduction to his book, Why Europe? writes:

“My teacher and later boss Alfred Hoffmann led me to read Max Weber , to whom this book owes so many suggestions. Alfred Hoffmann's liberality and generosity also enabled me to go my own way in my academic work. "
