Georgine Schubert (born October 28, 1840 in Dresden , † December 26, 1878 in Strelitz ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Georgine Schubert came from a musical family; her father François Schubert was concertmaster of the Saxon court orchestra and her mother the actress Maschinka Schneider . Her grandfather Georg Abraham Schneider was a horn player, composer and court conductor in Berlin , her uncle Louis Schneider was an actor and musician in Berlin.

Schubert received her first artistic lessons from her parents. On the occasion of a summer soirée , Schubert made the acquaintance of the opera singer Jenny Lind through her parents . She, convinced of her talent, supported and encouraged her in her training. Schubert was able to go to London in 1857 and from the summer of that year became a student of opera singer Manuel Patricio Rodríguez García ; partly she was taught with his son Gustave .

During this time, Schubert met regularly with Lind and received several private lessons from him. In 1858 she returned to Germany and went to her uncle Louis in Berlin. She also received lessons from him and with his support she was able to make a very successful debut at the Stadttheater in Hamburg on October 20, 1859 as a "night walker" .

From Hamburg, Schubert went on a long tour to and through Italy. Her appearances at Scala ( Milan ), Teatro La Fenice ( Venice ) and others have received much acclaim; the stagione system there suited her well.

Back in Germany, Schubert was committed to the royal court opera . From there she went to Paris , interrupted by a small engagement in Frankfurt am Main . There she met Daniel-François-Esprit Auber , Charles Gounod and Gioachino Rossini , among others , and quickly became a star of social life.

On their return home, a longer tour of Germany joined and ended in 1865 with an engagement at the Court Opera of Hannover . Two years later, Schubert moved to the Mecklenburgisch-Strelitzische Hoftheater in Neustrelitz and was there for the first time on January 3, 1867 as Rosina. Less and less guest appearances followed in the next. 1868 appointed the Grand Duchess Augusta Karoline them to Mecklenburg- strelitzischen Kammersängerin .

Suddenly and unexpectedly, Georgine Schubert died eight weeks after her 38th birthday in Neustrelitz and found her final resting place there.

Quote

When Gounod heard her singing during a rehearsal for his opera Faust , he is said to have exclaimed enthusiastically - "That's how I dreamed Margaret".
