Augusta Karoline Charlotte Elizabeth Mary Sophia Louise of Cambridge, Princess of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover (born  July 19, 1822 in Hanover ; † December 5, 1916 in Neustrelitz ) was a granddaughter of the British King George III. and by marriage Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Life

Augusta Karoline was the eldest daughter of Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge , and Viceroy of Hanover (1774-1850) and his wife Princess Auguste of Hesse (1797-1889), daughter of Landgrave Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel-Rumpenheim and the Caroline Polyxene from Nassau-Usingen. She grew up in Hanover, where her father was general governor and was appointed viceroy of Hanover from 1831 .

On June 28, 1843 married Augusta Karoline in London her cousin (first degree) Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1819-1904), son of Grand Duke George and Princess Marie of Hesse-Kassel . The marriage resulted in two sons, of whom only Prince Adolf Friedrich survived.

Although Augusta Karoline spent most of her life in Germany, she continued to maintain private contacts with the royal family. After the death of her mother († 1889) she inherited a house near Buckingham Palace , where she spent part of the year until her health made it impossible for her to travel. In preparation for the coronation of King Edward VII (1841-1910) and his wife Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925) on August 9, 1902, Earl Marshal Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk , asked about etiquette . Since there were no records of Queen Victoria's coronation in 1837, she was able to provide details of the details. She had a particularly friendly relationship with her niece and future queen, Mary (1867–1953). At their coronation on June 22, 1911 in Westminster Abbey , she was unable to attend for health reasons. During the First World War , correspondence with the British Queen could only be maintained through the Swiss embassy.

Grand Duchess Augusta Karoline von Mecklenburg-Strelitz died in Neustrelitz and was buried on the Mirow Castle Island in the crypt Mirow Johanniterkirche .
