Auguste of Hesse
Auguste von Hessen , full name: Auguste Wilhelmine Louise von Hessen (* July 25, 1797 at Rumpenheim Castle near Offenbach am Main ; † April 6, 1889 at St James's Palace in London ) was Duchess of Cambridge and Viceroy of Hanover by marriage .
Life
Auguste was the third daughter of Landgrave Friedrich III. von Hessen-Kassel-Rumpenheim (1747-1837) and his wife Caroline Polyxene von Nassau-Usingen (1762-1823). She grew up in Kassel and Aarhus , where her father served as a general in the Danish army. Her father was a grandson of the British King and Hanoverian Elector George II through his mother, Princess Maria of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover .
On May 7, 1818, Princess Auguste married her cousin (second degree) Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850), the seventh son of, on June 1, 1818 in Buckingham Palace in London, by procura in Kassel British King George III and his wife Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz . The marriage had three children:
- George William Frederick Charles (1819–1904)
- ⚭ 1847 ( morganatic marriage ) Sarah Louisa Fairbrother (1816–1890)
- Augusta Karoline Charlotte Elisabeth Mary (1822-1916)
- ⚭ 1843 Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1819–1904)
- Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth (1833–1897), mother of the future Queen Mary
- ⚭ 1866 Duke Franz von Teck (1837–1900)
After Hanover was liberated from Napoleonic occupation in 1813 , her husband, Adolphus Frederik , was appointed military governor and royal representative in Hanover by his brother, Prince Regent Georg (IV.) (1762–1830) . From 1830 to 1837 the next brother, King Wilhelm IV (1765–1837), installed Adolphus Frederik as viceroy in Hanover. After his brother Ernst August (1771-1851) took office as King of Hanover in 1837, the couple returned to England , because there was no longer any hope of the crown of Hanover.
