Princess Maria coat of arms

She was the daughter of King George II of Great Britain (1683-1760) and his wife, Margravine Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1683-1737).

On June 28, 1740 she married in Kassel the Landgrave Friedrich II. Of Hesse-Kassel . She had the following children with him:

When it became known in 1754 that the Hereditary Prince, Landgrave Friedrich II had converted to the Catholic faith , the marriage was separated, but not divorced in order to prevent Frederick from remarrying. Maria was removed with the three sons of the sphere of influence of Frederick, she moved to the Seven Years' War in the county of Hanau .

1736 died with Johann Reinhard III. the last male representative of the Hanau Count House . Due to the inheritance contract of 1643, the Hanau-Münzenberg part of the state fell to Hessen-Kassel . Landgravine Maria's father-in-law, Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel , transferred as much of his inheritance as possible to the grandson, Wilhelm (IX / I) , in order to punish his son for the conversion . This also included the county of Hanau . For the time of his minority Wilhelm VIII appointed Maria as guardian. Landgravine Maria ruled the county of Hanau from 1760 to 1764 for her son, Wilhelm (IX./I.).

She spent the last years of her life in Rumpenheim Castle . She is buried in the crypt of the Marienkirche in Hanau . The princess's library is now in the Archives of the House of Hesse in Schloss Fasanerie in Eichenzell .
