Dongeradeel ( West Frisian Dongeradiel ) was a municipality in the Dutch province of Friesland with 23,836 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2018). It has been part of the Noardeast-Fryslân municipality since 2019 .
) (Dongeradeel is located in the northeast of the province of Friesland.
geography
The community is a bit remote from motorways and railways in the north of the province on the Wadden Sea coast . The distance from Leeuwarden to Holwerd (ferry to the Wadden Sea island Ameland ) is about 25 kilometers in a north-easterly direction. You drive around 26 kilometers by car from Dokkum to Leeuwarden because the two cities are not connected by a direct road. Rather, the course of the road still leads past individual villages in the municipality.
places
The administrative seat of the municipality is the city of Dokkum , which lies on the southern border of the municipality. In addition, Dokkum is the northernmost city in the Frisian eleven cities .
In the municipality there are 27 villages from Holwerd in the northwest to Anjum in the northeast and Engwierum in the east. Most of them are situated on a mound ( West Frisian : terp ). Almost all of these villages have a village church built in the Middle Ages . The 27 villages of the municipality of Dongeradeel are:
Aalsum , Anjum , Bornwird , Brantgum , Ee , Engwierum , Foudgum , Hantum , Hantumeruitburen , Hantumhuizen , Hiaure , Holwerd , Jouswier , Lioessens , Metslawier , Paesens-Moddergat , Morra , Nes , Niawier , Oosternijkerk , Oostmahorn , Oostrum , Raard , Ternaard , Waaxens , Wetsens , Wierum .
history
→ For the city of Dokkum see the article Dokkum .
St. Boniface was killed in 754 at (not: in ) Dokkum by the then pagan Frisians . That is why Dokkum has been a place of pilgrimage since the 20th century .
Most of the places were built in the early Middle Ages when farming families raised a terp, an artificial hill, to protect their house and farm from flooding of the not yet diked Wadden Sea . When several farms stood on such a "terp", the often wealthy farmers could afford to have a church built: a village was created. Some of these churches were built at the expense of a monastery in the area.
Real dykes began to be built around 1100. A monastery entrusted with these activities, whose monks were Cistercians , stood u. a. at Niawier. In this "Greidhoek" (West Frisian for: Wieseneck ) there was cattle breeding from ancient times.
In 1883, 83 fishermen from Moddergat and Wierum drowned in a storm on the high seas. A memorial in Moddergat still reminds of this disaster. The church of Wierum also has a memorial for fishermen who “stayed at sea”. At Holwerd there is a memorial for British aviators who had an accident there during the Second World War .
The municipality of Dongeradeel was created in 1984 when the former municipalities of Dokkum, Westdongeradeel and Oostdongeradeel merged. Colloquially, the municipality is still often referred to with the plural de Dongeradelen .
economy
In Dokkum, which is the community's supply center, there are many shops and a few small factories. Apart from that, livestock farming and the associated small-scale business make a living in and around Dokkum. In addition, Dokkum also attracts many tourists with its beautiful, historic town center . Another attraction of the community is the possibility of water sports tourism in the fishing villages of Holwerd, Wierum and Paesens-Moddergat.
Attractions
- The Wadden Sea Coast: There are no beaches, but from Holwerd you can go hiking and boat trips to the Wadden Sea island of Ameland .
- The fisherman's house Fiskerhûske in Moddergat on the Wadden Sea coast allows insights into the former fishing life. This interesting local history and fishing museum is housed in a few picturesque houses from the 1790-1810 era.
- The bird-rich meadow landscape is typically Dutch. Along the many small villages you can see at Ee (protected village image) with its picturesque churches. There are also some windmills in Anjum and Metslawier .
- There is an exotic building in Hantum : a group of Buddhists has built a stupa based on the Indian model there.
