Niawier ( West Frisian Nijewier ) is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the Dutch province of Friesland . It is located northeast of Dokkum and has 365 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

history

The name of the village Niawier denoted a new ( nieuwe ) elevation ( wier ). The elevation referred to the terp , which was raised to protect against floods and floods. This terp was built in the High Middle Ages by the former Cistercian monastery Sion, which was a sister monastery to the Klaarkamp monastery . It was one of the richest monasteries in Friesland. However, there is now a residential building on the site of the former monastery.

A large number of silver coins from the period from 1562 to 1568 were found during construction work in 1972. Some of these coins were made in Groningen and some in Bruges . Since the city arms of Groningen are on some of these coins and the image of Philip II is on others , the origin of the coins could be determined.
