Ee [ eː ] ( West Frisian Ie [ ɪeː ]) is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the Dutch province of Friesland . Ee is located east of Dokkum and has 830 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
It is believed that Ee is derived from the Latin aqua (water). With only two letters, Ee is the shortest place name in the Netherlands.
history
Ee was built on a terp and probably existed before 900, because in 1980 remains of gray-kneaded pottery were found. Since 1580 there has been no Roman Catholic , but Protestant service in the village church. In 1879 the village had 1,085 inhabitants. However, the number of inhabitants fell to 993 by 1889 because arable farming could not keep up with the increased competition from abroad.
Parish partnership
Ee concluded with Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - the place with the longest place name in Europe - and Y - a French town with the shortest name municipalities in Europe - a community partnership .
