Ternaard is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the Dutch province of Friesland .
It is located in the northeast of the Dutch province of Friesland and is about 8 kilometers north of Dokkum . The village is close to the Wadden Sea and has 1,380 inhabitants. This makes it one of the larger villages in the municipality.
history
From the 8th century onwards, many names are known for Ternaard. The first is Tunenfurt, although it is not entirely clear what Tunen refers to. Either a person or a Germanic god would be possible . The meaning of ford , on the other hand, is easier to clarify, it describes a terp . Later the names Tunawert, Thunewerd, Tonauwer, Tijnnawerdt, Tennaard and Tonnaard are used synonymously for Ternaard.
Before the territorial reform in Friesland in 1984 , Ternaard belonged to Westdongeradeel and had its own parish hall. In 1984 Westdongeradeel were finally merged with Oostdongeradeel and Dokkum to form the new municipality of Dongeradeel. Ternaard has been part of Noardeast-Fryslân since 2019 .
In Ternaard itself there is a kindergarten, a primary school, a family doctor's practice and an old people's home. It is also home to a billiards club, a football club, a tennis club and a volleyball club, among others. Buses connect Ternaard with Dokkum and Leeuwarden .
The town's church dates from the 19th century and the furnishings are in the 17th century style. The last service in the church was held in October 2007. The parish of Ternaard was merged with a nearby parish. The church has since been sold.
