history

Prehistory and construction

On June 3, 1868, the Buschtěhrad Railway Company received a law permit to build a railway from Prague via Saaz and Komotau to the royal Saxon border to connect to the Chemnitz-Annaberger Railway and with a winged railway into the Rakonitz coal district, then from Priesen via Karlsbad to Eger and Franzensbad . In December 1871, the continuous rail line from Prague to Komotau and Eger was completed.

Opening dates:

  • Praha Dejvice – Kladno: November 4, 1863
  • Praha Bubny – Dejvice: April 27, 1868
  • Kladno – Stochov: April 22, 1869
  • Stochov – Sádek u Žatce: November 20, 1870 (freight traffic) ; February 4, 1871 (passenger traffic)
  • Sádek u Žatce – Chomutov: February 4, 1871

In the operation of the BEB

In the years that followed, the line developed into one of the most important connections in northern Bohemia. In freight transport, the coal trains from the North Bohemian Basin were particularly dominant.

The BEB was nationalized on January 1, 1923 as one of the last large private railways in Bohemia. From then on, the line was integrated into the network of the Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD.

After nationalization

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the section from Satkau to Komotau was part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . The station Satkau (Sádek u Žatce) was designated as the border station. In the realm course book the connection was under the timetable track 167b Komotau-Luschna-Lischan included. After the end of the Second World War , the entire line came back to the ČSD.

After the Second World War

At the beginning of the 1980s, the section from Žatec to Březno u Chomutova was electrified with the 3 kV direct current system common in Northern Bohemia. Electric train operations began on October 31, 1985. To date, however, only the coal trains have been driven electrically. All other trains are still supported by diesel locomotives or railcars.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

The expansion of lignite production in the North Bohemian Basin near Chomutov required the route to be re-routed. The 7.109 km long new route crosses under the Farářka ridge near Droužkovice in a tunnel almost two kilometers long. The new construction route was financed with funds from the mining company Severočeské doly . Construction work began on March 1, 2000. The original budget was CZK 1.2 billion . Because of the problematic subsoil found during the tunnel construction, the costs rose to a total of around CZK 2 billion. On April 1, 2007, train traffic began on the new line. The Droužkovice municipality received a new stop on the route.

The current gap between Březno u Chomutova and Chomutov is to be closed by 2024. Electrification was not carried out there in the past due to the planned expansion of the mining areas in the area of the route, which was then implemented by 2007. The electrification work is planned between October 2023 and October 2024 with a budget of around one billion crowns. The systems are designed for a contact line voltage of 25 kV 50 Hz in order to enable the planned later changeover without any problems.

From 2022 the dilapidated Rynholecký tunnel is to be replaced by a new route. The new, above-ground route through an abandoned quarry will be around one kilometer long. It is expected to cost around 120 million crowns.

In the Prague city area, the line is to be expanded to double tracks and fundamentally renewed and electrified for high-speed rail traffic to Prague Airport and towards Kladno. The plans are currently based on a realization from the year 2025.

Train traffic

In the past, high-quality long-distance trains such as the Praha – Chomutov route also ran. B. the connection Praha – Karlovy Vary. The last time a supra-regional train traffic was observed during the modernization work on the Praha – Děčín railway line , when part of the traffic had to be diverted via parallel alternative routes.

The last express trains Praha – Chomutov were discontinued at the 2008 timetable change. Instead there is now a two-hour express train service from Praha – Lužná u Rakovníka – Rakovník and Lužná u Rakovníka – Chomutov – Jirkov, with correspondence in Lužná. The express trains Plzeň – Most, which run every two hours with one interval, use the route between Žatec and Chomutov. Other express trains run the route Praha-Kladno-Kladno-Ostrovec every two hours with compressors during rush hour.

Passenger trains run on the connections Praha – Kladno (every hour) and Kladno – Lužná u Rakovníka – Rakovník (every two hours). Since the timetable change in 2007, some of the stations between Deštnice and Žatec and the Denětice stop in the Žatec – Chomutov section have not been served since the responsible Ústecký kraj canceled the traffic stops . With the 2008 timetable change, the clocked passenger train traffic between Žatec and Chomutov ended, so that the above-mentioned express and express trains now form the majority in passenger traffic.

The route is no longer of any great importance in freight transport. The coal trains starting in Březno u Chomutova are today departed from Žatec via Bílina and Ústí nad Labem into the interior of the country.

Vehicle use

Since 2013, the express trains Praha – Rakovnik have mostly consisted of the newly introduced push-pull trains, which are run by a class 750 locomotive. The local trains and express trains on the Praha – Kladno or Luzna u Rakovnika – Chomutov – Jirkov sections are mainly driven by the 814 series railcars.

The express trains Plzeň – Most were run with railcars of the ČD series 842 and a sidecar until December 2016 , after a change of operator after a direct assignment to GW Train Regio, since then with railcars of the DB series 628 .
