Oosternijkerk ( West Frisian Easternijtsjerk or simply Nijtsjerk ) is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the Dutch province of Friesland . It had 940 inhabitants in 2017.
To avoid confusion with the hamlet of Nijkerk in Ferwerderadiel , the village of Nijkerk in Noardeast-Fryslân (then part of the municipality of Dongeradeel ) was renamed Oosternijkerk and the hamlet of the same name was renamed Ferwerderadiel Westernijkerk.
history
Unlike most of the other villages in the region, Oosternijkerk was not built on a terp , but was founded as a street village in the 11th century after the dykes were built in this area. Most of the dikes were done by monasteries because they owned large amounts of land in the area.
