On February 8, 1916, he was appointed to the professorship of mathematics and mechanics at the University of Leiden , which he did on May 16 of the same year with the introductory speech Over 't Snijpuntenstelsel van twee Algebraïsche Krommen (German: About T Intersections of Two Algebraic Curves ) started. During his professorship, among others, Dirk Struik , Nicolaas Kuiper , Gerrit Bol , Egbert van Kampen , Tatjana Pawlowna Ehrenfest became his students. In the academy year 1934/35 he was rector of the University of Leiden , for which he gave the rector's speech Meetkunde en ruimteleer (German: geometry and space theory ) on February 7, 1935 .
