The Ihleburg lock was a lock structure in the Ihle Canal between the towns of Ihleburg and Güsen and is still a residential area . During the construction of the Elbe-Havel Canal , the lock was shut down and largely demolished. Remnants of the lock are preserved as a memorial .

description

During the construction of the Ihle Canal from 1865 to 1872, which connected the Plauer Canal north of Bergzow with the Elbe at Niegripp , three locks were installed in it. These were the Bergzow lock , the Ihleburg lock and the old Niegripp lock . When the canal was expanded from 1883 to 1891, the Bergzow and Ihleburg locks were extended. The Ihleburg lock was 47 meters long and 8 meters wide. A gradient of around 2.5 meters was overcome. The Elbe-Havel Canal was built from 1926 to 1938. It replaced the Plauer and Ihle Canal and was dug in their beds over long distances. When the new canal was built, the Plaue lock and the Kade lock in the Plauer Canal were replaced by the Wusterwitz lock and the Bergzow and Ihleburg barrages were combined in the Zerben lock . In this context, the Ihleburg lock was decommissioned and filled in. The former lock settlement was retained as a place to live. In the course of the expansion of the Elbe-Havel Canal and its widening, the remains of the wall on the north bank of the former Ihleburger lock located in the expansion area were completely removed in 2015.

Parts of the lock, such as a section of the former northern wall of the chamber, have been preserved as memorials on the north bank of the canal. An artistic installation was set up from scraps of steel.
