Wilhelm Polte (born January 11, 1938 in Niegripp ) is a German politician ( SPD ). After reunification, he was mayor of Magdeburg and from 2002 to 2006 a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt .

Life and work

Polte began training as a machine fitter in 1952 and then studied mechanical engineering from 1955 to 1958 . From 1958 to 1960 he worked as a technologist before completing a university degree until 1965. From 1965 to 1968 Polte worked as a project engineer in a large company in Leipzig. He then worked in a technology research institute in Magdeburg before joining the Magdeburg Technical University in 1978 , where he was employed until 1990.

Polte is married and has two children.

Political party

Shortly before the Wall was built in 1961, Polte secretly joined the SPD in West Berlin , was a founding member of the SDP in the GDR in 1989 and was SPD chairman in the former Magdeburg district in 1990 .

Political mandates

Polte was a member of the first freely elected People's Chamber in the GDR. In the same year Polte became Lord Mayor of Magdeburg and held this office until 2001. From 2002 to 2006 Willi Polte was elected to the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt via the state list of the SPD and was chairman of the committee for the interior there. Willi Polte did not run for the 2006 state elections and retired. From 2001 to 2009 Willi Polte was the local mayor of Niegripp in the city of Burg (near Magdeburg) .
