Hermann Beims (born April 26, 1863 in Haverlah , Goslar district , † December 20, 1931 in Magdeburg ) was the Lord Mayor of Magdeburg.

Life

As the son of a weaver, he attended elementary school in Goslar from 1878 to 1881 and then became a trained carpenter. In 1887 he joined the SPD . In 1892 he settled in Goslar as a carpenter. A year later, on April 1, 1893, he married Minna Schwerdtfeger from Baasdorf near Köthen in Goslar . In 1896 he gave up the trade and worked as a rendant . Between 1899 and 1902 he ran a garden restaurant in Osterode am Harz .

In 1902 he became workers secretary in Magdeburg and from 1906 secretary of the SPD district association. From 1905 to 1917 he was a member of the Magdeburg city council and from 1917 to 1919 he was the first social democratic councilor in Magdeburg. On April 24, 1919 he was elected Mayor of Magdeburg without dissenting votes and remained so until 1931. From 1919 to 1920 he was a member of the Weimar National Assembly and was then elected several times to the Reichstag . At times he was also a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Saxony and from 1926 a member of the Prussian State Council .

In his administration he tried to find balance and compromise. Magdeburg became the center of new building . During his tenure, modern residential areas were built in the suburbs, including the Beimsiedlung in the Stadtfeld West district . Other important buildings were the exhibition center in Rotehornpark and the Magdeburg city hall.

Beims aimed to expand Magdeburg to become the capital of Central Germany.

His widow died on November 25, 1945 in Magdeburg.

Honor

Magdeburg named the neighboring settlement that arose during his time in office after him . The Beimsstraße located there and the adjacent Beimsplatz also got his name. There is also a street named after him in Haverlah, his birthplace (Beimsstraße).
