Wide way ; Old Town district ; ZIP 39104

Formerly:
The Breite Weg, first mentioned in a document in 1207, was the most important (and widest) traffic artery in the city of Magdeburg and crossed it in a north-south direction. After the destruction of Magdeburg in the Thirty Years War , it was rebuilt with a large number of buildings in the Baroque style . However, this unusual street scene fell victim to air raids during World War II. Only two baroque houses (No. 178 and 179) have been preserved. In the time of the GDR it was named after Karl Marx for ideological reasons ; after the end of socialism it was given its old name again. Its importance as a traffic artery has declined significantly, since through traffic is otherwise routed past the city center. The northern part of the Breiten Weg, built with prefabricated buildings from the GDR era, is now a pedestrian zone . For the urban structure, the Breite Weg is still the central component today.

The name Buttergasse can be traced back to the fact that there were stalls selling butter here on market days . After the destruction of the Second World War and the reconstruction that did not adhere to the established urban structure, this small alley disappeared from the cityscape. Today, however, a restaurant housed in an old vault nearby still bears the name Buttergasse , so that it is still present in linguistic usage. Butter dough ; District Cracau ; ZIP 39114

The origin of the historical name Buttersteig is not clear. It is believed that the name goes back to the function of the route as a way of the Cracowers to the market in Magdeburg , where butter was also traded; So Butterweg in the sense of way to the market.
According to another opinion, an original nature of the path was the reason for naming it. The path then led through swampy terrain, so that it “buttered”. In fact, there were swampy spots near Cracau. After 1927 , the area was filled with rubble from demolished fortifications and then built on from 1929 .
