Born is a district of the Westheide community in the north of the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt.

geography

Born is located in the south-western part of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide , the largest contiguous heathland in Central Europe. The area is very wooded and gradually slopes down to the west (to the Ohretal ). The district town of Haldensleben is approx. 12 km away , the state capital Magdeburg approx. 35 km away. The district borders in the north on the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel .

history

Born is historically connected to the town of Calvörde , which belonged to the exclave of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . The place was in the former half court, an area that was claimed half by the Archbishopric of Magdeburg and half by the House of Braunschweig. Born came to the office of Calvörde in 1571 after Calvörde was redeemed by Duke Julius of Braunschweig and combined with the half-court (with Born, Dorst , Uthmöden and Zobbenitz ).
The office Calvörde existed until 1945.

Born was part of the Elbe-Heide administrative community founded on January 1, 2005 , to which 16 member communities belonged.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities Born, Hillersleben and Neuenhofe merged to form the new community Westheide .

badges and flags

The coat of arms was approved on October 27, 1994 by the Magdeburg Regional Council.

Blazon : "In silver on a green shield base, a red fountain ring with a black gallows."

The flag of Born shows the colors red / white with an applied coat of arms.

Economy and Infrastructure

The region east of Born is still used to a large extent by the Bundeswehr as a military training area Altmark in Letzlingen ( combat training center for the Army ). Until the early 1990s, Soviet troops were stationed near Born , including the 448th Missile Brigade.

Born is located on the federal road 71 , which opens up the western heath area in a north-south direction. For several decades, an east-west crossing of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide was impossible over a length of 40 kilometers (from Uchtspringe to Haldensleben). A cross-connection from Born / Hütten to Colbitz (on the B 189 ) has been open to road traffic since 2004 , which somewhat alleviates the longer detours. In the district town of Haldensleben there is a rail connection to Magdeburg and Wolfsburg .
