Neu Olvenstedt is a district of the city of Magdeburg . 11,207 inhabitants live in an area of 3.3669 km² (as of December 31, 2016).

history

1980s

Neu Olvenstedt is one of the younger districts of Magdeburg. In 1980, the first earthworks began for the later development area. On January 31, 1981, the foundation stone was laid for the first apartment block. The later Neu Olvenstedt was divided into three construction phases. The last and third construction phase was completed during the fall of the wall.

With the construction of Neu Olvenstedt, the direct connection of the incorporated village of Olvenstedt to the then district capital was to take place. At the end of 1981 the first 166 apartments were handed over to tenants. However, the residents had to struggle with a lack of infrastructure and undeveloped roads until the mid-1980s. Towards the end of the decade, the urban area developed into one of the most modern in the GDR . In addition to numerous kindergartens and crèches, several schools, youth clubs and restaurants were built in the construction phases. In the spacious and traffic-free inner courtyards, children found an ideal playground, as the construction of children's playgrounds was somewhat neglected. In addition, a swimming pool, four department stores and the Olven 1 shopping street were built. In 1989 around 30,000 people lived in Neu Olvenstedt.

1990s

After reunification , Neu Olvenstedt got into the international media through right-wing extremist acts of violence and was considered a critical district of Magdeburg. Among other things, the 17-year-old Frank Böttcher was killed in an attack by neo-Nazis.

The building structure with buildings predominantly in the GDR panel construction proved to be unsuitable for modern living requirements. Numerous Magdeburg residents left Neu Olvenstedt and moved to newly built residential areas on the outskirts or to the city's now renovated old buildings. Suburbanization, i.e. the emigration of people from the city to the surrounding communities, also posed a major problem. Communities such as Ebendorf , Barleben , Hohendodeleben or Irxleben lured with cheap building land for private homes and recorded a huge increase in population, which is what they in the city of Magdeburg Name "bacon belt". As a result of the emigration, citizens of the middle or lower income groups remained in the urban area, so that social problems became more apparent in this district than in other urban areas.

Todays situation

In 2002 the city of Magdeburg included the district in the " Urban Redevelopment East" program . With the demolition and demolition of vacant apartments and entire apartment blocks, almost 3,000 apartments (as of December 31, 2007) have been taken off the market. In the "Rennebogen" project alone, almost 1,500 apartments were turned into rubble within a few weeks by demolishing around 100 connected entrances. Nevertheless, around 3,000 apartments are still empty.

Development of vacancies: December 31, 2000: 12,686 residential units | of which 3,443 vacancies | Vacancy rate 27%
December 31, 2007: 9,749 residential units | thereof 2,915 vacancies | Vacancy rate 30%

The number of acts of violence has decreased in Neu Olvenstedt, but many socially disadvantaged people live in the district due to the cheap rent. Fully refurbished apartments at low rental prices, the traffic-calmed location, many green spaces, parks and the convenient transport links through public transport, roads or bike paths have seen an increase in students and older people for some years. Most of the apartments have now been fully refurbished, and some prefabricated buildings have been converted into row houses or apartments thanks to their Lego principle. The grassy areas of the former Rennebogen residential area are to be built with one and two-family houses in the near future. In 2010, these measures led to the fact that in some areas of Neu Olvenstedts there were more immigrants than emigrants for the first time since the reunification.
