Northwest is a district in the north of Magdeburg . 4,625 inhabitants live in an area of 2,729 km² (as of December 31, 2016). The name Texas is also used colloquially for the area .

Junkers settlement

The Junkers settlement also belongs to the district. The Junkers engine works built the Junkers settlement for their workers and employees in the 1930s. Some of the streets were named after employees of the Junkers factories. Around the settlement 1621 allotment parcels were laid out on 739,984 m².

How Northwest got the name Texas

From 1943 many refugees, displaced persons and war victims were quartered in and around the northwest. The building structure in the north-west had remained relatively intact, only three British high- explosive bombs fell on January 16, 1945 , which, although the greatest damage in Kleeweg in a house garden, had ruptured a 10 m deep bomb crater, but otherwise only buried one person. Due to the sometimes catastrophic supply situation, thefts occurred in the gardens, chicken and rabbit pens , which ended in sometimes severe physical vigilante-like disputes.

The riot police were constantly on duty. Due to the numerous fights and vigilantism it was received as in "Texas".

During the GDR era , the Max Lademann youth club was known beyond the city limits as DER SCHUPPEN and was probably more notorious because it was also a relatively frequent contact point for the People's Police. The “shed” is used today by the People's Solidarity as a meeting place for senior citizens.

For these reasons, people are still driven to the northwest when they tell a Magdeburg taxi driver the destination Texas.

When the primary school was about to close, the authorities were confronted with the contentiousness of the local Texans. The primary school and day care center remained in the northwest. In October 2010 the primary school was completely demolished except for the sports hall and the chimney. The new building is to be carried out as part of a PPP project.

development

Unlike other parts of the city, Texas has seen an influx of people since 1993. The development plan (only one and two-story construction in certain areas) and the idyllic plots with some very old vegetation and trees were likely to have been decisive for this.

The old, now renovated building stock is also very rarely vacant. On the outskirts of the city, new residential areas were and will be B. Developed and marketed at Bördegarten . The favorable location and easy accessibility as well as the acceptable range of trade and services increase the attractiveness of the district. The proximity of the Magdeburg Clinic, which is equipped with the latest intensive care medicine, and the FLORA-Park , one of the largest shopping centers in the city, also contribute to this.

Many Texans who had to leave Northwest for work or private reasons have returned. Several generations in the neighborhood are not uncommon.

Starting in 2006, approx. 4000 m² of rental apartments in Hugo-Junkers-Allee were converted into row houses. The rental housing stock has therefore become scarce. A trend that continues.

The settlers and allotment gardeners

Northwest, with 1621 allotments, is Magdeburg's arbor stronghold. The association of allotment gardeners has its seat here. The large number of allotment gardens is historical. Even when planning the Hugo Junkers settlement, the families living there, which were often very large at the time, should have the opportunity to supplement their menu with fresh vegetables, fruit, and chicken and rabbit meat at a reasonable price. In the settlers' restaurant, called DIE KISTE by the Texans , the board of directors of the settler community meets once a month. The regular settlers' pleasures also take place there.

economy

Purely residential area with small businesses and allotment gardens, five doctors' offices, two physiotherapists, a supermarket, a pharmacy, an ice cream parlor, a flower shop and various other service providers. Some of the stores also have Texas in the company name.

Local transport opens up north-west with bus lines 52 and 72. Otherwise, north-west is except for Holzweg and Hugo-Junkers-Allee Tempo 30 zone or traffic-calmed area .

Until 2005, both a Catholic and a Protestant kindergarten existed in the same building on Juliusstrasse in Texas. After almost 50 years they were merged into an ecumenical kindergarten.

Elbkinder-Chor of the Northwest Primary School

The choir of the Northwest Primary School works with Rolf Zuckowski . Concert tours and appearances, including with Rolf Zuckowski, in front of large auditoriums with an audience of 5,000 to 8,000 are part of the program. The choir currently consists of 32 girls and one boy. The Magdeburg handball club SCM Gladiators, which currently has fans in Texas, also hired the school choir for the closing event of the 2005 summer season in the Bördelandhalle. The choir was able to prevail against all other applicants.

Parishes

The Catholic wooden church was demolished in the early 1990s due to severe disrepair, the property was parceled out and semi-detached houses were built on. The congregation in Neu Olvenstedt has received a new church in the St. Joseph congregation with the St. Josef Church (Magdeburg) . The Protestant parish, Kreuzkirche (Magdeburg) , in Flachsbreite 17, has a church near the Bördegarten and is chairman of the ecumenical kindergarten association.

Buildings

Fort VI of Magdeburg Fortress, located in the area of the district, is listed in the local register of monuments.
