The Sülfeld lock in Wolfsburg district Sülfeld bridges a difference in height of nine meters between the summit level and the Osthaltung the Mittellandkanal at MLK-km 236.93. The Sülfeld lock is a lock group consisting of the old shaft lock from 1938 and the new lock from 2008.

The old lock (north chamber) was built from 1934 to 1937 and put into operation in 1938. It is a savings sluice with six savings basins on three levels, which are arranged on both sides of the chamber and enable savings of 67 percent. It has a chamber length of 225 meters and a chamber width of twelve meters. The jamb depth is three meters.

New lock

The new lock (southern chamber) was built between 2004 and 2008. It is also an economy lock. The open savings basins are arranged on one side on two levels and enable savings of 50 percent. The chamber is half a meter wider than the old lock. The jamb depth is four meters. This means that the lock is passable for large motor freight ships (GMS).

history

The Sülfeld lock was originally put into operation in 1938 as a double lock with two identical locks. In the same year, the first structural damage on the southern chamber had to be repaired. In the following years there was repeated damage that had to be repaired. In order to guarantee the operational safety of the south lock, it was renovated from 1963 to 1964.

The north chamber had a better structure. It was renovated from 1988 to 1990 and modified at the bottom of the chamber in order to allow passage with the Europaschiff with a loading depth of 2.50 meters . The control center was also renewed.

In the course of upgrading the Mittelland Canal to waterway class Vb, a further expansion of the Sülfeld lock became necessary. The structurally poorer southern chamber was demolished in 2004 and replaced by a new building that was put into operation in 2008.

The Sülfeld lock is a cultural monument of the city of Wolfsburg.

Auxiliary systems

The lock is located immediately to the west of the main railway line Hanover - Berlin, which crosses both basins of the lower canal section on two bridges at an acute angle. This location and the space required for the savings basins determined the (original) offset arrangement of the two lock chambers.

South of the lock system was created with the construction of the canal in the 1930s sluice settlement . Lock workers lived in the twelve houses. These are small buildings that give a typical example of settlement construction at that time. Today these houses are occupied by private individuals who have no professional connection to the canal.

Trivia

Since the inland waterways order defines the journey in the direction of the Elbe-Havel Canal (i.e. eastwards) as an uphill journey on the Mittelland Canal , the paradoxical situation arises at the Sülfeld lock that a “mountain driver” actually moves from the upper section to the lower section at 9 Meters down .
