Herrenkrug is a district of Magdeburg , the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt . The Herrenkrugpark located in the district is often referred to as the Herrenkrug .

geography

The Herrenkrug district in the northeast of Magdeburg has 1,249 inhabitants on an area of 12.0503 km² (as of December 31, 2016). The district lies east of the Elbe , which also forms its western border. In the north and east the Herrenkrug borders on the communities of Biederitz and Möser , in the south on the districts of Berliner Chaussee and Brückfeld .

Large parts of the north of the Herrenkrug are shaped by the Elbe floodplain and are flooded at higher water levels. In the east of the district there is a forest area with the Biederitzer Busch , in the southwest towards the Elbe the Cracauer Anger . Two large urban parks reinforce the natural location. There is a development in the southwestern part of the district.

In the area of the district are the lakes Black Hole , Long hole , Garnsee and in Elbauenpark located Angersee and Pappelsee and part of the Alte Elbe several lakes.

history

As part of the Elbe, the Herrenkrug area has always been characterized by changing water levels and courses of the nearby Elbe. Originally heavily forested, however, extensive clearing took place in early history.

Parts of today's district were owned by the magistrate of Magdeburg and were used as pastures and for the extraction of wood and hay. In order to counteract theft, the magistrate had a guard house built in 1676. The building was also licensed and served as an inn for the nearby highway from Magdeburg to Burg (near Magdeburg) , the route of today's Bundesstraße 1 and that of Berliner Chaussee did not yet exist. Since the inn was ultimately owned by the magistrate and thus by the councilors, the name of Mr. Kruge emerged , which has been preserved to this day. The pub also offered accommodation. A ferry and a dairy farm were also operated.

This gastronomic, agricultural and forestry use continued over the centuries with varying degrees of intensity and under different tenants.

At the beginning of the 19th century during the Napoleonic wars and the French occupation of Magdeburg, the inn fell into disrepair. The French governor of Magdeburg had the building demolished in 1813. At this point the new rifle house of the Palatinate Colony was built . The old fell victim to a Napoleonic decree in 1812, which ordered the complete demolition of the suburb of Sudenburg . Extensive clearing took place again between 1807 and 1814.

From 1815 there were plans to create a park in the Herrenkrug, which was actually implemented under Mayor August Wilhelm Francke . The Herrenkrugpark, which still exists today in different designs , was created.

In the years 1836/37 the park area and with it the southern part of today's district was diked and thus separated from the frequent floods of the Elbe. The rifle house was demolished again in 1843/44. The result was a classicist society house designed by city architect Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff , which was torn down in the 1950s - although it was undamaged during World War II. In 1886 the park was connected to Magdeburg's old town southwest on the other side of the Elbe by a steam tram . In 1900 the tram was switched to electrical operation. A park restaurant was built in 1887 and a hall was added in 1903/04. To the east of this building complex, the Herrenkrug racecourse was built in 1907 . Horse races had already taken place on the former meadow since 1838.

The mother oak, originally located in the east of what is now the district, was of particular importance for the Magdeburg labor movement . The oak, which grew around the year 1600, served as an illegal meeting place for the Magdeburg Social Democrats at the end of the 19th century .

By 1926, the Herrenkrugpark was expanded to the north with a meadow park that included the Biederitzer bush and the meadow landscape.

The Cracauer Anger, located south of the Herrenkrugpark, served in parts as a parade ground early on and was used for military purposes. Intensive military use took place by the Wehrmacht . After the end of the Second World War , the barracks and surrounding open spaces were then used by the Soviet Army . Apartments for the Soviet officers have now been set up in the upper-class villa settlement Margarethenhofsiedlung on the road to Biederitz . The Soviet army withdrew in 1991, which ended the decades of military use.

Parts of the military buildings, such as the military hospital, were renovated and are now the seat of the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences , as well as authorities such as the municipal road traffic authority and the Magdeburg tax offices .

A large part of the former military installations went into the Elbauenpark Magdeburg, which was opened for the 1999 Federal Horticultural Show . The landmark of the park, the millennium tower , represents the architecturally most distinctive point of the district.
