God's garden house

The former ecumenical church of the Federal Horticultural Show in 1999 in today's Elbauenpark in Magdeburg was called God's Garden House . Currently (as of 2010) the building is referred to as a garden house and is essentially no longer used for religious events.

architecture

The building, located in the southwestern part of the park area near the Old Elbe , was built in 1998/1999 according to plans by the architect Friedhelm Ribbert . A pavilion-like building was created on an octagonal floor plan . The building materials wood and glass dominate. In the center of the building there is a small, also octagonal atrium with a hornbeam growing in the middle . A multi-purpose room opens up to the atrium through extensive glazing. The two building fronts facing the entrance area are also glazed.

The roof of the pavilion is designed as a green flat roof, over which the crown of the hornbeam rises. The floor of the entrance area, multi-purpose room and adjoining room are covered with end- grain paving , which was recovered when a workshop of the former Magdeburg armatures plant (MAW) was torn down.

Furnishing

During the 25th Federal Garden Show from April 23 to October 17, 1999, the building was equipped with an electronic organ. The organ and sound technology were on loan from the Hoffrichter company in Salzwedel . A simple-looking metal cross, created by Werner Nickel from Nienburg , was shown in the pavilion . The altar was designed by young people from the BAJ vocational training center , and the vases were made by the Bernburg ceramist Kwaschik .

history

In the planning phase of the pavilion, the project was accompanied by a joint commission from the Protestant and Catholic Church in Magdeburg. The name goes back to a suggestion by the Evangelical Magdeburg bookseller Martin Holtermann and was inspired by the building's design, which is reminiscent of a garden pavilion.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 18, 1998 in the presence of the then Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt Reinhard Höppner . The opening took place on April 25, 1999 with an ecumenical service. Intensive use then took place during the Federal Horticultural Show. A short prayer was held daily at 12:00 p.m. and a service every Sunday at 12:00 p.m. There were also other events and concerts.
