St. Adalbert Church

Sankt Adalbert is the Catholic church in the Magdeburg district of Reform . It is the only church in the Diocese of Magdeburg that is named after St. Adalbert von Magdeburg , the first bishop of the Diocese of Magdeburg. The church belongs to the parish of St. Sebastian in the dean's office in Magdeburg.

history

As part of a special church building program of the GDR , the construction of St. Adalbert's Church in the south of Magdeburg began in 1984 with financial support from the Diocese of Paderborn , to which Magdeburg belonged at the time. The foundation stone was laid in 1983. The church was on 10 November 1985 by the Magdeburg Bishop John Brown ordained . In the altar of the church were relics of St. Burchard I of Halberstadt embedded.

On April 1, 2006, the Magdeburg Mitte community association was established, comprising the parishes of St. Adalbert, St. Johannes Baptist , St. Norbert and St. Sebastian. At that time the parish of St. Adalbert belonged to around 670 Catholics. On May 2, 2010, today's cathedral parish of St. Sebastian emerged from the community. The St. Marienstift Chapel also belongs to this parish today.

Building

Belfry

The church is an octagonal hall building with a hipped copper roof. In contrast to the St. Mechthild Church in Magdeburg , which was built a year earlier , the St. Adalbert Church did not have a cellar for cost reasons . Since 1993 there has been a small free-standing belfry in front of the church with a bell cast in 1959 .
