Samaritan Church

The Church of the Pfeiffer Foundations (also Samariterkirche ) is a Protestant church in the Magdeburg district of Cracau .

history

After the Pfeiffer Foundations were founded in 1889 as the "Evangelisches Johannesstift" for the care of the elderly by the Evangelical Superintendent Gustav Adolf Pfeiffer , the Church of the Pfeiffer Foundations was consecrated on May 8, 1899 . During an air raid on the city of Magdeburg on January 21, 1944, the church was almost completely destroyed, so that it was threatened with demolition. Reconstruction work did not begin until 1949 and was completed that same year.

Building

The planned use was already taken into account when the church was designed. A side hall was specially designed for the disabled, wheelchair users and carriers. The neo-Romanesque brick church consists of an octagonal domed building with a vestibule and two side halls. The bell tower is located on the dome of the octagon . The altar windows particularly show scenes in which Jesus encounters with disabled people. In 1951 the church received a shell limestone altar based on a design by the sculptor Ludwig Göbel , and in 1953 a crucifix by the sculptor Rudolf Wewerka . In 1955 a gallery was built into the church and the organ was put up again.
