Rudolf Wewerka (born August 27, 1889 in Albrechtsdorf ; † June 28, 1954 in Magdeburg ) was a German sculptor and artist .

Life

Rudolf Wewerka is the son of the painter and ceramicist Joseph Wewerka. In 1901 the family emigrated to Höhr-Grenzhausen . There Rudolf Wewerka studied with Ernst Barlach at the technical college for ceramics. Around 1907 he worked in a ceramics company in Bonn and later switched to the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts . From 1914 he studied sculpture at the State University of Applied Arts in Berlin. After participating in the First World War as a soldier , Wewerka lived in Magdeburg from 1918 and was one of the founders of the late Expressionist artists' association Die Kugel . There he made friends with Bruno Taut , Karl Krayl and Bruno Beye . In 1933 Wewerka was banned from working and moved to the Lüneburg Heath , where he worked with the garden architect Heinrich Nachtweh, ​​among others. After 1945 he created murals, sculptures and monuments. Are u. a. the memorial for the victims of fascism in Gardelegen (1950) and the Karl Marx memorial in Wernigerode from 1953.

He is the father of the German artist Stefan Wewerka and the stepfather of the politician Werner Steffens .
