Mar Hall Hotel

The Mar Hall Hotel , formerly Erskine House or Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers , is a hotel and former mansion and hospital near the Scottish town of Erskine in the Renfrewshire council area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1988.

history

On the nearby banks of the Clyde is the predecessor of this mansion, which was once the seat of the Lords Blantyre . In 1778 it was expanded again. Robert Stuart, 11. Lord Blantyre commissioned the construction of a new seat in 1826. For this he hired the English architect Robert Smirke , according to whose design construction began in 1828. Stuart died in 1830 before Erskine House was completed. The work was not completed until 1845. The total cost was around £ 50,000. There are different details about when the previous building was torn down. By 1856 at the latest there were no more traces.

After the extinction of the Lords Blantyre line in 1900, Erskine House stood empty for some time. In 1916 the Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers was established there, a nursing home for amputated sailors and soldiers. After the construction of the new clinic decades later, the building was again empty and was restored in 2002 for around £ 15 million. The Mar Hall Hotel opened in 2004 and continues to use the premises to this day.

description

The Mar Hall Hotel and several outbuildings are isolated on spacious grounds not far from the banks of the Clyde. The two-story building is designed in the Tudor style. The north-facing front is constructed symmetrically. Six octagonal turrets rise along the facade. The entrance is on the east side and is designed with a bulky porte-cochère with pointed arches . A two-storey utility wing adjoins it in the southwest, creating an L-shaped courtyard. Inside, the high entrance hall with the corridor leading off with ribbed vaults and the elaborately designed rooms, some of which have vaulted ceilings, are highlighted. The building ends with concealed, slate-covered roofs with a flat angle of inclination.
