Robert Stuart, 11th Lord Blantyre

Robert Walter Stuart, 11th Lord Blantyre (born June 10, 1777 - September 22, 1830 in Brussels ) was a British nobleman , military man and politician .

He was the eldest son of Alexander Stuart, 10th Lord Blantyre from his marriage to Catharine Lindsay. As apparent marriage of his father, he carried the courtesy title of Master of Blantyre from birth , before he inherited the title of Lord Blantyre on the death of his father in 1783, at the age of six .

He attended Eton College and joined the British Army in 1795 as an ensign of the 3rd Foot Guards . He took part in the coalition wars and fought first in the Den Helder expedition in Holland in 1799 and in Egypt in 1801 . He became captain of the 31st Foot and later captain of the 7th Dragoons .

On December 4, 1806 he was elected as the Scottish Representative Peer to the British House of Lords . He resigned this mandate on April 29, 1807 and later took part in the fighting in Pomerania and Zeeland . In 1809 he fought in Spain and became Lieutenant-Colonel of the 42nd Foot . On June 4, 1815, he was named Companion of the Order of the Bath and promoted to Major-General in 1819 .

From 1820 to 1822 he was Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire . In 1826 he commissioned the construction of a new family home, Erskine House in Erskine , Renfrewshire. In 1830 he was present as an observer at the Belgian September Revolution in Brussels when he was fatally wounded by a stray gunshot.

Marriage and offspring

On February 20, 1813 he had married Fanny Mary Rodney (1791-1875), a granddaughter of the 1st Baron Rodney and the 6th Earl of Westmeath . With her he had six sons and five daughters:

  • Hon. Fanny Mary Stuart (1816–1896), ⚭ 1847 William Busfield Ferrand († 1889), MP;
  • Hon. Georgiana Eliza Stuart (1821–1904), ⚭ 1857 Sir Andrew Buchanan, 1st Baronet († 1882), British Ambassador to St. Petersburg and Vienna;
  • Hon. Caroline Henrietta Stuart (1825-1825);
  • Hon. Caroline Stuart (1830–1911), ⚭ 1850 John Ogilvy-Grant, 7th Earl of Seafield .

Since his firstborn son Alexander had died young, his second son Charles inherited his title of nobility.
