The Karl Marx Monument in Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt is a monument created in 1953 in memory of Karl Marx . It stands on the edge of the old town in a small park between the Zillierbach, known here as the flood race, and the corner of Salzbergstrasse / An der Flutrenne. The western gate crossing is not far from the monument.

history

A bronze bust of Marx, created by Rudolf Wewerka , stands on a high plinth . The memorial bears the inscription "Karl Marx" carved in stone. In the wall behind it there are two bronze plaques with scenes from the life of Karl Marx. The memorial was inaugurated on November 7, 1953 on the occasion of the 70th year of Karl Marx's death. In Wernigerode it is still considered to be the first monument to the philosopher and pioneer of communism in Germany . This statement is incorrect, as a Karl Marx monument was erected in Dresden on the former Platz der Einheit in March 1953 , but it no longer exists today.

The bronze bust of the philosopher was knocked off its base and damaged at the end of 1989. The city administration then had the bust stored in a warehouse belonging to the garden department. At the request of the PDS parliamentary group in the Wernigerode city council, the bust was re-erected a few days before Karl Marx's 180th birthday on May 5, 1998 at the old location of the city of Wernigerode under Mayor Ludwig Hoffmann . A few days later, on the night of May 4, 1998, the bronze Karl Marx bust was stolen. The honor for the 180th birthday of Karl Marx, organized by members and supporters of the PDS, therefore had to take place without the original bust at the memorial. A bronze head the size of a fist by Karl Marx, which was placed on the empty original base, served as a substitute for the honor.

On May 7, 1998, two days after the festivities, police officers discovered the battered Karl Marx bust in the bank area of the Wernigeroder Reddeberteiches near the Teichmühle not far from the B244 and seized it. The bust suffered mainly from scratches on the eyebrow and nose. It was stored again in the garden department and later set up again at the original location.
