Trüberbrook

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trüberbrook is a video game from the German production company bildundtonfabrik . The adventure takes place in the eponymous fictional German village Trüberbrook in the 1960s . The game was first released as a download in March 2019. The press attracted particular attention to the elaborate graphic style made possible by photogrammetry .

Trüberbrook won the German Computer Game Award 2019 in the categories "Best Staging" and "Best German Game".

action

The main character is the young American physics doctoral student Hans Tannhauser, who apparently won a trip to West Germany to the rural, remote village of Trüberbrook in a competition. Tannhauser accepts the invitation to the idyllic area. The theft of his treatises in quantum physics from his accommodation in the Waldeslust guest house is combined with the task of saving the world at the beginning of an adventure. In Trüberbrook, Tannhauser met the paleoanthropologist Gretchen Lemke, who accompanied him on this task.

Production notes

The game is being developed by bildundtonfabrik in the specially set up office in Berlin. Designer Florian Köhne is the author, director and creator of the game world . The publisher is the Düren label Headup Games . Work on the video game began in 2015. As a test run for the development of an adventure game, the games Game Royale - Raiders of the Lost Baldness and Game Royale - The Secret of Jannis Island were developed and published as accompanying material for the television program Neo Magazin Royale .

The development of the game is financed through cross-financing through revenues from the television and video productions, through funding from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg amounting to € 80,000 and through a Kickstarter campaign . The campaign, which was prominently supported by Ron Gilbert, among others , was launched on November 14, 2017 and reached its goal of € 80,000 the following day. It ended after 30 days at a stand of almost € 200,000, making Trüberbrook the most successful crowdfunding game from Germany in 2017.

Justin Beard , Nora Tschirner , Dirk von Lowtzow and Jan Böhmermann are named as speakers for the characters . In addition to their German speaking role, they also take on their respective English-speaking part in order to give the villagers an authentic German accent in the international version of the game. The spokesman Pat Murphy was the only one who gave his voice to four different characters.

A lot of development effort goes into creating the game's scenery. These are first set up as physical models , then digitized as 3D data with different decorations and lighting moods using photogrammetry and finally processed on the computer. The video game is implemented with the Unity 3D engine .

A first playable demo version of Trüberbrook was presented at Gamescom 2018 in Cologne. The 100 pre-orderers of the Early Access version received access to a pre-release version of the game on Steam on March 2, 2019. On March 12, 2019, the game was released for PC gamers on Steam and GOG. The PC version went on sale in the DA-CH region on March 14, 2019. On April 17 and 18, 2019, digital and worldwide physical sales of the console version began.

reception

In the first reviews of the game, the elaborate look was particularly praised. On the other hand, the testers noticed negatively that the puzzles are often very easy and the playing time is also rather short. The setting and the story were received differently by critics. Some praised the SciFi story, others found the dialogues unimaginative.

The game received a rating of 83% and an award for its successful presentation in the specialist magazine GameStar , while Computer Bild Spiele gave Trüberbrook a test mark of 2.0 (good).

Trüberbrook was nominated in a total of 4 categories for the German Computer Game Award 2019 : Best German Game, Best Youth Game, Best Staging and Best Innovation. The game won the award in the categories “Best German Game” and “Best Staging”.

During the 26th International Festival of Animated Film in Stuttgart , Trüberbrook received the “Animated Games Award” for the best visual design and aesthetics. In addition, the game was nominated in six categories for the German Developer Award 2019 .
