The International Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart - Festival of Animated Film ( ITFS ) has been a festival for animated films that has been taking place since 1982. It is the largest event of its kind in Germany and one of the largest worldwide. The ITFS is organized by the Stuttgarter Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH, the artistic director is Ulrich Wegenast , the commercial and organizational director is Dieter Krauss . The festival started every two years, in 2005 it was decided to organize the festival annually due to higher funding.

About the festival

The spectrum ranges from classic cartoons to artistic cartoons to full-length 3D computer animation films as well as real-time and flash animations. As part of the promotion of young talent, which is an important cornerstone of the festival, a competition for students has been announced. Thus, many of the films shown come from film and art schools.

The large open-air cinema on Stuttgart's Schlossplatz.

The Stuttgart city center cinemas “Gloria” and “Metropol” have been used as screening venues since 2006. At the same time, there will be an open-air cinema on Stuttgart's Schlossplatz . Also Ludwigsburg is used as an additional festival venue since of 2006. In 2011, animated short and long films were shown on a large LED wall on Schlossplatz from noon. Since 2012, around 80,000 viewers have come to Stuttgart every year to see around 1,000 films at the open air and in Stuttgart's city center cinemas. The GameZone is about the interfaces between animation and computer games and took place in 2018 - for the 25th anniversary of the festival - for the first time in addition to the art museum in the "Lichtwolke" pavilion in front of the courtyard of the New Palace, which is held annually by the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH for the Raumwelten Congress is being set up in Ludwigsburg.

During the festival, the "Animation Production Days" take place as a business platform for the international animation industry. The ITFS also works closely with FMX , the Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Immersive Media, Europe's largest specialist event for animation, effects, games and transmedia.

In 2020, ITFS had to be canceled for the first time due to the corona pandemic. The festival took place online as OnlineFestival.ITFS.de during the same festival period. More than 200 competition films of the current year could be viewed on demand after registration. Talks, masterclasses, film screenings as well as the opening and award ceremony took place in the free live stream from May 5 to 10, 2020.
