Barry Purves

Barry JC Purves (born July 3, 1955 in Woodbridge ) is a British animator, director and non-fiction author.

Life

Purves first studied drama and Greek civilization at Manchester University and was active as an actor and stage manager in theaters in England before turning to animation in 1978. He worked for Cosgrove Hall Productions and Thames TV from 1978 to 1986, where he created numerous television fiction films and series. Purves specialized in puppet animation and joined Aardman Animations in 1986 . Three years later he founded his own animation film studio Bare Boards, with which he made commercials, among other things. Also in 1989 was his directorial debut Next , in which he brought in every play by William Shakespeare in seven minutes . In 1993, Screen Play followed in the style of Japanese Kabuki - or theater. For the eleven-minute short animated film, Purves received an Academy Award nomination in 1993 in the category Best Animated Short Film .

Purves created puppet designs for the feature film Mars Attacks! , but it was decided to make the film computer-animated. He was also involved in the animation in the film King Kong and had an advisory role on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King . In addition to his work as an animator, Purves is also active as a non-fiction author in the animation field and is a theater director and actor, primarily at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse in Manchester. Purves has already presented numerous of his animated films at the Stuttgart Animated Film Festival , where he was a member of the jury in 2013 alongside Daniel Kothenschulte , Jakob Schuh , Mihai Mitrică and Marie Paccou in the International Competition .
