Woodbridge (Suffolk)

Woodbridge is a place in Suffolk ( East Anglia ) in England , with a population of 10,956 (as of 2001), located on the River Deben , first historical mention in 970.
The former administrative seat of the Suffolk Coastal district , which was dissolved in East Suffolk in 2019, was once a port town and has been known as a center for boat building, rope making and sailmaking since the Middle Ages. King Edward III and Sir Francis Drake had warships built in Woodbridge.
Attractions
- The town has a tide mill that was restored in 2004 . This is one of only four of its kind in the United Kingdom and one of the oldest, as it was first mentioned in 1170. At that time it was run by Augustinian monks . In 1536 it passed to King Henry VIII , and in 1564 Queen Elizabeth I donated it to Thomas Seckford. He founded the Woodbridge School, which still exists today, in 1577.
- To the east of Woodbridge is Sutton Hoo , a series of grassy burial mounds in which a ship's grave dating from 625 and rich in relics was found in 1939 . Possibly it is the grave of the Anglo-Saxon King Rædwald of East Anglia .
