East Suffolk is a district ( English district ) in the county of Suffolk in England . The official seat is at East Suffolk House in Melton , part of the Lowestoft Government .

history

East Suffolk was formed on April 1, 2019 on the basis of an ordinance issued in May 2018 and emerged from the merger of the Waveney and Suffolk Coastal districts . At that time, East Suffolk was the most populous non-metropolitan district in England with 246,913 residents. Under the name East Suffolk there was an administrative county between 1888 and 1974 , but it covered a larger area.

Both predecessors each had their own District Council with a total of 90 members. With the first election, which was scheduled for May 2, 2019, the number should be reduced to 55. Stephen Baker is in charge of administration.

There are 177 parishes in the area of ​​East Suffolk . Of these, 161 have their own parish council, in the remaining 16 residents' assemblies take place instead. Aldeburgh , Beccles , Bungay , Carlton Colville , Felixstowe , Framlingham , Halesworth , Kesgrave , Leiston-cum-Sizewell , Lowestoft , Saxmundham , Southwold and Woodbridge call themselves Town , the local council is called Town Council accordingly .
