Kōji Yamamura ( Japanese 山村 浩 二 Yamamura Kōji ; born June 4, 1964 in Nagoya , Japan ) is a Japanese animation film director .

At the age of thirteen he made his first cartoon. Yamamura studied painting at the Zokei University in Tokyo and finished his studies there in 1987. Films like One Night Serenade were made under the influence of Canadian and Russian animation artists .

In 1993 he founded the company Yamamura Animation Production together with his wife Sanae . The highlight of his career so far was the year 2003, in which his work Atama-yama ( d, dt. "Kopfberg") was nominated for the category Best Animated Short Film at the 2003 Academy Awards , as well as the Cristal d'Annecy , the most important award of the Festival d'Animation Annecy , won. This ten-minute film is about a man with a cherry tree growing on his head.

With Kafka: Inaka Isha , an adaptation of Franz Kafka's story Ein Landarzt was published in 2007 . For this he won the main prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival , the Hiroshima Kokusai Animation Festival , the Ōfuji Noburō Prize and the Grand Prix at the Stuttgart Animated Film Festival .

His works are characterized by strong individuality and technically very diverse.
