Animanimals is a German cartoon series . The first broadcast took place on October 12, 2013 on KiKA , the main target group are children of preschool age. The series created by the animated film director and author Julia Ocker was awarded the Grimme Prize in 2019 . The first episodes were created as part of the SWR children's program Ich kenne ein Tier .

Each of the episodes revolves around an animal that has to cope with a certain situation or task. There are always funny and bizarre experiences, for example when the zebra tries to sort its jumbled strips again, the lion is not fit enough to run after the gazelle or its eighth arm prevents the octopus from baking a cake.

The series works completely without language. Motives for actions include teamwork, solidarity, creativity and social competence.

reception

The jury of the Grimme Prize praised the series for its “loving, high-quality animation that evokes a unique aesthetic through its strong attention to detail”. Animanimals is an “outstanding entertainment format for the youngest target group”, and the subtle nature of the educational aspect was also emphasized. In summary, the jury described the series as “an outstanding example of high-quality, innovative and courageous children's television that sets itself apart from the crowd”.
