action

“Boj is listening. Something is in the living room. It's dad ”. Suddenly, however, Papa is no longer there. The eyes harden and the little boy knows immediately what is happening: Bösemann climbs up on his father's back and takes possession of the person who should show him love and affection.

The children's book Sinna Mann is about the 6-year-old boy Boj, who suffers from his father's outbursts of violence together with his mother. Gro Dahle's book describes the uncertainties, unrest and tension when the loving father changes in the family and becomes the “bad man”. Once Bösemann has taken possession, neither doors nor tears stop him. Boj's father becomes violent and he becomes a victim of his own aggressions. The little boy is sent to his room, the maternal protective instinct has long since become a routine in order to defuse the situation, at least for the child. But the walls cannot hide what is happening. The security that homes are supposed to provide has long since disappeared. Bad man lurks everywhere - always ready to jump on the father. Only outdoors does the oppressive confinement of the house dissolve. Boj meets people who can help him. Far from the clutches of the bad man, the thoughts are clearer, a little dog and a king turn out to be Boj's closest allies.

background

Sinna Mann was written on behalf of the family therapist Øivind Aschjem and the Alternative til Vold foundation as a reading book for children of all ages who suffer from domestic violence or are witnesses of violence.

After the release there was a lot of media attention in Norway. The reactions to the book have been different. Many were of the opinion that the theme and form of the children's book were too tough for children, while others saw the book as a good way of conveying the explosive topic of domestic violence. The intense poetic language with many repetitions and metaphors as well as the large, expressive images are characteristic of the style of Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus.
