The Zillierbach (also called Zillier Bach and Flutrenne in the lower reaches ; formerly Holtemme , later Zilgerbach ) is a 14.7 km (with Wormsgraben 16.3 km) long, orographically right and southeastern tributary of the Holtemme in the Harz in the Harz district in Saxony- Stop .

course

The Zillierbach springs within the natural parks resin / Saxony-indication in the National Park resin on the east face of Hohnekamms , the Hohneklippen wears. Its source is below the Hohnekopf about 1 km northwest of Drei Annen Hohne near the HohneHof nature experience center (formerly Hohne Forestry House ) at about 610  m above sea level. NN .

After 480 m the source stream joins the stronger Wormsgraben , which carries water from the Wormke to the Zillierbach and is hydrographically calculated as the upper reaches of the Zillierbach. The 2 km long Wormsgraben was created with a slight gradient on the south and south-east flanks of the Hohneklippen.

From this confluence, the Zillierbach flows south-south-east and, when you leave the Drei Annen National Park, it reaches Hohne , which is on state road  100 ( Schierke - Hasserode ). From there it runs in a north-easterly direction and feeds the Zillierbach reservoir (storage target: 470.19  m above sea level ). In the Mühlental below , the brook first passes the Peterstein and then along the federal road 244 the Scharfenstein and the Voigtstieg settlement (to Wernigerode). Its north-west facing lower course, which flows along the B 244 through Nöschenrode and Wernigerode, is also known as the flood channel .

After passing the western gate tower in Wernigerode and passing under the B 244 there , the Zillierbach finally flows west of the Wernigerode-Westerntor train station at 235.1  m above sea level. NN into the Bode inflow Holtemme . This results in a height difference of 374.9 m.

Even with its natural source stream (14.68 km) and even more so with the Wormsbach (16.28 km in total) and the upper Wormke (18.28 km in total), the Zillierbach is significantly longer than the Holtemme above its mouth (10 , 74 km).

history

The Zillierbach was called Holtemme until the 16th century , then from 1558 Zilgerbach . Only later did it get its current name. The inconsistent water flow of the brook was compensated by the artificially created Wormsgraben at the end of the 12th century. From the Middle Ages to the construction of the Zillierbachtalsperre (1934–1936), the stream drove the mills, like the forest mill , in the section of the stream between Voigtstieg and Wernigerode . This section of the valley is still called Mühlental today .

In the mill valley there were numerous mills that were used differently over time. The forest mill was located in the upper Mühlental and today's restaurant and sports facility is still called that today. Immediately below that was Hartmannsmühle, which today operates as the Alte Mühle and houses a hotel and guesthouse. Further down the stream followed a so-called Mostrichmühle and the Storchmühle, a well-known and in GDR times large consumer restaurant that was demolished a few years ago.

Habitat and ecological permeability

The Zillierbach is home to a number of rare wild fish, including the protected brown trout , the heraldic animal of both the city of Wernigerode and the Harz district. In addition to the brown trout, minnow , gudgeon and loach can also be found in the water . To improve the ecological permeability of the Zillierbach, a project funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt was carried out from 2000 to 2002 , within the framework of which five transverse structures were provided with fish ladders in order to create a continuous passability for the brown trout, for example. The project was one of the decisive factors for the award of the city of Wernigerode in the competition "Federal Capital of Nature Conservation".
