The Sankt Sebastian Church (also St. Sebastian Church ) in the Magdeburg district of Lemsdorf is the parish church of the local Protestant parish. It should not be confused with the Catholic cathedral of the same name in Magdeburg city center.

History and architecture

In Lemsdorf there was a church dedicated to Saint Sebastian since the 13th or 14th century . With a size of only around 120 m², it no longer met the needs of the village, which had grown strongly at the end of the 19th century and was then still outside the gates of Magdeburg. The old building made of field stones was blown up by Magdeburg pioneers in November 1887. On August 16, 1889 the foundation stone was laid for a new church and on November 9, 1890 the inauguration took place.

The the Romanesque modeled style building consisted of nave, the cross rectangular tower and the five-sided sanctuary with its erected at the edges buttresses and parallel attached annexes . Except for the tower, all the roofs are now covered with red tiles. The tower, slightly narrower than the nave, is adorned with gothic gables and has a slate-covered gable roof with a hexagonal ridge turret , which in turn is crowned with a pointed helmet. On the upper floor, the tower is provided with three sound openings on the east and west sides and two on the narrow sides. In the north and south sides of the nave, four round arched windows are set in close rows. Each side of the sanctuary is provided with a round window in the upper area.

The interior of the nave is closed off with an open, boarded roof truss. A gallery is attached to the west wall . The round windows of the chancel, which has a ribbed vault, are decorated with glass paintings showing Christ and the symbols of the four evangelists .

The church received two bells when it was rebuilt. The larger one with a lower diameter of 91 cm, cast by the Collier company in Zehlendorf in 1890, was donated by the landowner Köhne. The smaller bell with a lower diameter of 67 cm was cast by the Ulrich brothers in Apolda in 1877 . The big bell was melted down during the First World War .

The organ installed in 1904 was also donated by the estate owner Köhne.
