In a north-south direction, the Anger is divided by Herrenkrugstrasse . The area west of the road to the Elbe is referred to as Kleiner Cracauer Anger , the area to the east as Großer Cracauer Anger .

history

The Cracauer Anger was already used as pasture in the Middle Ages . The area, characterized by moist meadows, stretched over 450 hectares north of the village of Cracau to the Herrenkrug. Flora and fauna corresponded to the typical conditions of the Elbe meadows, so the Elbe beaver was also native there.

Intensive military use began in the middle of the 19th century, initially as a parade ground . Previously, in the course of the expansion of the Magdeburg Fortress with the tower hill , smaller areas had already been used for military fortifications. The Friedrichstadt district of Magdeburg that was created in this context cut off the remaining Anger from the eponymous village of Cracau further south. The Herrenkrugpark landscape park was created in the north .

In 1873 a shooting range was set up on the Anger, and barracks were built later . Today they are partly used for civil purposes.

The Cracauer Anger was also the scene of aviation history. On October 28, 1908, Hans Grade undertook one of the first German powered flights here. With a triplane he reached a height of eight meters. An airfield was set up on which a zeppelin landed in 1914 . The airfield was later given up in favor of the Magdeburg airfield in the south of the city.

From 1922 to the 1930s, the sports facility of the Viktoria football and cricket club was located on the Anger, roughly in the area of today's main entrance to the Elbauenpark.

In the time of National Socialism , the military use was increased. In addition to the construction of an infantry barracks, the Anger was practically completely used by the Wehrmacht from 1938 . In addition, there were clay pits and brickworks, but also excursion and dance halls.

Millennium tower on the Kleiner Cracauer Anger

At the end of the Second World War , the Kleine Cracauer Anger was used to store the rubble from the city of Magdeburg, which was badly destroyed by air raids. The level of the parade ground in the Elbaue was increased by about five meters.

Until 1992 the Cracauer Anger served the Soviet army as a barracks and military training area. Subsequently, a comprehensive removal of ordnance and the recultivation of the area became necessary, which was prepared for the Federal Garden Show in 1999 . Various tourist-oriented buildings were built, such as the millennium tower on the Kleiner Cracauer Anger, the floating stage and the Großer Angerfelsen .

Today's Elbe Park represents the subsequent use of the Federal Garden Show grounds, to which the butterfly house was added.

Since August 2011, the Cracauer Anger solar park with a nominal output of 8.5  MWp has been built on the southern slope side of the former household waste dump , which is supposed to supply around 10,000 people with environmentally friendly electricity.
