history

Since 1838 the meadows near the Elbe have been used for horse races. With financial help from the city of Magdeburg, a grandstand was built in 1879, but it was destroyed by fire in 1900. A racing club founded in 1906 by 250 Magdeburg citizens then had the racetrack built, which was inaugurated in 1907 and which still largely exists today.

On August 15, 1909, the Crown Prince's race took place in front of 42,000 spectators. In the same year flight demonstrations, among others by Hans Grade , were carried out on the facility.

During the Second World War, there was an air defense position on the site , which resulted in major damage to the grandstand and the buildings of the racecourse.

The first race after World War II took place in August 1949. In the interior of the racetrack, however, vegetable gardens were first laid out after the war.

A major event in the time of the GDR was the Catholic Day , which was held on September 8, 1968 and attended by 30,000 people on the occasion of the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg . The Catholic celebrations for Corpus Christi also took place regularly on the racetrack.

In 1975 the racetrack was placed under monument protection. However, the structural substance fell into disrepair during the GDR era.

Renovation work took place after 1990. In 2002, however, the facility was hit by the Elbe flood of the century . There were also financial problems in the racing club. In 2004 the facility was reopened.
