Stover Beach

Stover Strand is a district and a recreation area in the Lower Saxon municipality of Elbmarsch in the Harburg district .

Stover Strand is located 25 km southeast of Hamburg and 5 km northeast of Winsen (Luhe) in the municipality of Drage (Elbe) . Neighboring areas are the Stover Holz and Elbstorf . The adjoining Elbe beach is over 700 meters long at low tide.

history

Stover Strand has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Stove was mentioned for the first time in 1162. Stove belonged to the parish of Bergedorf . In 1200 the Elbe shifted its course. Before the Second World War, the area was used for agriculture. After the end of the war, Stover Strand became a local recreation area for Hamburg residents who came across the Elbe from Altengamme on an Elbe ferry . The ferry ran until 1965. From 1950 tourism began to grow . First we camped in the meadows on the Elbe. There were tent sites at the rifle house and on the Stover racecourse. Later they also camped behind the dike. In the 1960s, Stover Strand was split up. In 1980/81 the dike was built for flood protection.
