The Karlshorst Trabrennbahn is a historic 37 hectare facility for horse races in Berlin's Lichtenberg district, Karlshorst . It is located on Treskowallee near the Karlshorst S-Bahn station . After the Vorwerk Karlshorst, the racecourse is the oldest settlement in the area around today's Karlshorst. It is gradually being expanded into an equestrian park.

The traditional Great Prussian Army Hunting Race has been held on the nearby Vorwerk Carlshorst since 1862, based on the model of an English steeplechase . Behind this was the initiative of the later general of the cavalry and then wing adjutant to King Wilhelm of Prussia, Alfred Bonaventura von Rauch, together with Rittmeister Christian Prinz zu Schleswig-Holstein and Lieutenant Ottokar Graf von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff. The purpose used racecourse served as alternate parcours for in Charlottenburg existing obstacle course. The first public horse race took place in Karlshorst in 1884. The actual Karlshorst racecourse was built towards the end of the 19th century on an area of around 1.2 square kilometers, which the landowner Sigismund von Treskow sold in 1893. At that time, the association for obstacle races from Charlottenburg was looking for a new site, with the Karlshorst location prevailing against Zehlendorf, Kaulsdorf and Tempelhof. The critics would have preferred to see the new obstacle course in Zehlendorf between Berlin and Potsdam, because Karlshorst did not even have a railway connection at the time. According to plans by the architects Johannes Lange (high-rise buildings), Rudolph Jürgens (landscaping) and Martin Haller (sport-technical design), however, the horse racing track for obstacle and hunting races was built in 1893/1894 . In 1895, the Carlshorst station went into operation and a six-track terminal station was built next to the suburban platform especially for racecourse visitors.

After the Second World War until the end of the 1990s

1945, the system was on the order of the Soviet Commandant Colonel Berzarin for trotting rebuilt and size as approximately enlarged to twice. During the division of Germany, this was the only trotting track in the GDR and was operated by the state-owned company Trotting Studs and Trotting Track . After reunification, the Treuhandanstalt leased the Karlshorst equestrian facility to the Trabrennverein Mariendorf (TVM), which already managed the Mariendorf trotting track . This meant that there were four days of racing a week, two on each track.

After 2000

The TVM withdrew due to the economic decline of horse racing in the early 2000s. In 2004 the Karlshorst racetrack was put up for sale. After TLG Immobilien , a successor to the Treuhandanstalt, divided the area, half of it could be sold to the newly founded Equestrian Park Berlin-Karlshorst eV and the other half as building land. The building land was created by demolishing some stable buildings, the casino and the riding arena and is now largely built on with single and multi-family houses, which form the Carlsgarten settlement area.

The remaining area of around 37 hectares is actively looked after by the association. The success of the work was reflected in the increasing number of visitors, increasing betting sales and the appearance of sponsors . The concept was “close to the people” from the start and geared towards the mass of visitors. For example, you can buy shares in racehorses for little money and become co-owners for a fraction of the cost. There is a driving school for trotters where anyone can take lessons. In addition to the regular weekly racing days, there was a major event in autumn 2007 with over 30 Roman chariots, legionnaires and Ben Hur . The most important race of the year is the Bersarin Memorial Race . The association and the marketing agency GPM LiveMarketing do everything in their power to make the trotting track attractive for large events. Among other things, the German-Russian Festival has become a showcase project for this purpose , which had more than 110,000 visitors in 2008.

Grandstand of the harness racing track

A permanent safeguarding of the racing operations by settling the Berlin police rider squadron in Karlshorst paved the way in 2009, when a lease was negotiated with the federal police . In the short term, however, the possible location for the equestrian squadron was relocated to Stahnsdorf , and the listed Karlshorster site has since struggled with major financial problems. The continued operation of the racetrack is also ensured by French trotting fans. Trotting is very popular in France. A French betting company invests in some racing days, the races from Karlshorst are then broadcast live on French television.

An economic development project initiated in March 2011, each 50 percent financed from funds from the EU Fund for Regional Development and the joint task of improving the regional structure (with around 100,000 euros annually), is now to put the equestrian park on a broad basis in order to ensure long-term preservation to secure. The acquisition of investors, the infrastructural development of the site including the construction of a riding arena , a horse farm, a youth hotel with the most self-sufficient energy supply possible through a biogas plant are on the agenda of the project team.

In 2016, the Foundation Rehabilitation Center Berlin-East acquired an approx. 100,000 m² section of the facility that had previously been fallow. The largest equestrian sport and riding therapy center in Germany was completed there in 2019 . In addition to stables for 90 horses with various exercise and pasture areas, riding arenas and outdoor riding arenas for therapy, leisure and sports activities were built.
