The Dortmund Galopprennbahn is located in the Wambel district of Dortmund .

A racecourse was built in Dortmund as early as 1893. The von Romberg family built a race track on their own land at the Buschmühle , south of today's Westfalenpark . However, this first racetrack fell victim to the expansion of the Phoenix-West ironworks .

They looked for a new location and found it in the Wambel district. Today's racecourse was opened there on July 3, 1913 . It was laid out according to plans by the Cologne architects Stein and Ziedorn with representative and now listed grandstands, stables and company buildings , partly in half-timbered style . In the 1920s, additional stands and buildings were built.

In 1963, the closing event of the 11th Evangelical Church Congress with 350,000 participants took place on the racetrack.

In 1981, the construction of a floodlit sand track made it the first all-weather track in Europe that also allows racing days in winter.

The Wambel racecourse has a 2000 m grass track and a 1600 m all-weather sand track. The German St. Leger and the Great Price of the Dortmund Economy are held annually on the racetrack, which is equipped with floodlights and covered grandstands .

There is a 9-hole golf course in the inner field of the racetrack .

The racecourse is registered as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund .

The training site is currently being sold as a residential area. Training operations are stopped and the stables, living quarters and outbuildings are demolished. The actual racing is to continue, and the grandstands are to be retained.
