German St. Leger
The German St. Leger is a traditional horse race that has been held since 1881 and is now held on the horse racing track in Dortmund . The race goes over a distance of 2,800 meters. The organizer is the Dortmund racing club. The race took place in Hanover until 1908 , on the Grunewald racecourse until 1933 and on the Hoppegarten horse racing track until 1946 , although it was not held in 1914, 1915, 1945 and 1946. Dortmund has been the venue since 1947 , with the exception of 1948 and 1949 ( Düsseldorf ) and 1953 ( Krefeld ).
The race is named after Anthony St. Leger, who founded the English equivalent of this race in 1776.
With the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen - German 2000 Guineas over 1600 m in Cologne and the over 2,400 m German Derby in Hamburg-Horn , the German St. Leger is one of the most important annual horse racing events in Germany. Together these three races form the so-called Triple Crown .
Up to and including 2006, only three-year-old horses were allowed to start in this race. As in some international counterparts, four-year-old and older horses have been allowed to compete since 2007. This measure was taken due to the increasing lack of starters in this race. The meanwhile failed El Tango was able to enter the list of winners in 2007 as the first non-three-year-old winner as well as the first horse to win this race twice.
Until 2005 the race was still a Group 2 race , in 2006 it was downgraded to Group 3.
