Kevin Woodburn (born July 17, 1957 in Ulverston ) is a British jockey and coach for horse racing.

Life

Woodburn came to Germany in the 1970s as a groom and worked with trainer Heinz Jentzsch , among others . In his career as a professional racing rider, he won more than 1500 races and twice the German Derby in Hamburg . In early 2002 Woodburn switched to the coaching profession. Since 2017 he has been riding again as an amateur jockey.

Woodburn began his jockey training in England at the age of 14. He only slowly gained a foothold in Germany until he finally belonged to the elite of jockeys in Germany at the time when he won the German Derby with Mondrian in 1989 . With Mondrian, Woodburn won the Grand Prix of the Berliner Bank (99th Grand Prix of Berlin ) and the 117th Grand Prix of Baden at Group I level in the same year . In 1995 Woodburn won the derby again with All my Dreams , in 1996 he was successful in another classic race, with the litter pigeon in St. Leger . He won other big races, such as the Aral Cup 1991 (Indica), the Berlin Grand Prix 2001 (Anzillero) and the 1999 European Prize with Belenus. He wasn't very successful as a coach. In 2019, Woodburn won the amateur championship of racing riders at the age of 62. In 1997 he won the championship for professional riders.
